St. Alban's School exists because of a public
servant. Born an orphan in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, Harriet Lane
Johnston presided over both the Court of St. James and the White House for
her uncle, James Buchanan. At her death in 1903, she left the bequest
that created St. Alban's School. We'd argue that no other school in
this country is more acutely aware of how essential the concept of public
service is to a democracy. At the School of Public Service (SPS), you
will explore issues as diverse and profound as freedom of speech in
television, national security, the power of the presidency, ethics in
decision-making, electronic commerce, and international and global
affairs. Always, we will ask you to think about what is right and best
for the public good.

Headmaster, St. Alban's School
As you read these pages, I hope you consider the incredible opportunities
that await you at the School of Public Service (SPS). In just three
years, the students who have attended SPS have captured the hearts and minds
of many faculty, parents, public servants, guests, and friends. Our
alumni have come to understand that this program is much more than just
another way to spend the summer; it is a transforming and ongoing
experience.
As we expand our outreach opportunities, we have
been met with the resounding enthusiasm and continuing participation of the
85 graduates of our program. We are encouraged by all the
possibilities that the SPS network provides our alumni. We hope that
you will want to become one of the SPS group and take full advantage of that
network throughout your lifetime.
I hope you will contact us here at SPS so that we
may arrange for you to hear firsthand from our graduates. They are a
wonderful embodiment of all that is good about the youth of America!
