David Zimand Teacher
David Zimand has served on the faculty of the School of Public Service since its inaugural session. During the academic year, he teaches US History at St.
Albans's sister school, the National Cathedral School (NCS), where he is Head of the Social Sciences Department and one of two Faculty Representatives to the
Board of Trustees. In his time at NCS, Mr. Zimand has served as Faculty Sponsor of the School Government and of the school newspaper The Discus, as a member of
the school's Honor Board, and as the leader of a school-wide Curriculum Review. He has also served on three occasions as a reader of the AP Examination in US
History and as an Independent Consultant drafting questions for the Educational Testing Service.
Mr. Zimand is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with Bachelors and
Masters Degrees in American Civilization; he also holds a Masters Degree in History from Northwestern University. Before coming to NCS, Mr. Zimand taught at Northwestern, at the School of the
Art Institute of Chicago, and at several Elderhostel programs in the Chicago area. He received a Teacher Recognition Award from the US Presidential Scholars
Program in 1998. Mr. Zimand lives in Silver Spring, Maryland with his wife, Laurel Mendelson, a public servant working at the Food and Drug Administration, and his two
daughters, Margalit and Liran, who attend the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation's Capital.
