Folks:
I think I sent this out when it first came in:
"Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin
puts together a list to
try to give the faculty a sense of the indset of >this
year's incoming
freshmen. Here's this year's list: The people who are starting
college this
fall across the nation were born in 1983. They are too young
to remember the
space shuttle blowing up."
As of this past Saturday they are no longer too young, and
neither are you.
Many tears and much ink has been spilled about the Columbia,
and more is to
come. I would ask you to remember that they were volunteers
in a high
calling. I would also ask that you remember that more people
are killed on
America's highways in two hours, every two hours, all year
long, every year.
America has assigned its risks and its priorities, as every
civilization must.
What follows is a memorandum from the head of Aerospace
Science at the
California Science Center to the Center's staff. The author
deals well with
the disaster, risk, and reward.
