At St.
Albans, we have inculcated in our students a sense of public service
to the place where they live. We have even had a graduate take our
prayer to the moon, an act of glory I mention because that very
prayer in orbit prays that "the Commonwealth may benefit by
our labors." No other school in this country has the number
of public servants as graduates nor, would I argue, is more acutely
aware of how essential the concept of public service is to a democracy.
The St. Albans School of Public Service offers you four weeks to
gather in a community of young men and women from around the country
to focus exclusively on the role of our government, private sector
and non-profit institutions that work to create a civil society
for all Americans. You will explore issues as diverse and profound
as freedom of speech in television, national security, the power
of the presidency, ethics in decision-making, electronic commerce,
and international and global affairs. The program will put you front
and center and at the heart of decision-making; you may find yourself
assigned at various times the roles of the President, a member of
Congress or an everyday business person trying to manage in a world
of government regulation. Always, we will ask you to think about
what is right and best for the public good.
You will meet speakers from all walks of life who have dedicated
themselves to public service: over dinner, breakfast, an Internet
chat or a more formal gathering. You will also meet extraordinary
peers from all across the nation who share your interest in public
service and how government works. The program is an excellent preparation
for the demands excitement of college
Our hope is that you will leave the summer with an understanding
of how public service works and the desire to join the men and women
who work in the public sector. We will equip you technologically
to keep up with your network of classmates, mentors and teachers;
we want to see you and hear of you years from now. Our hearts will
be strengthened by whatever you choose to do to improve our society.
We look forward to seeing you in June.
Sincerely,
Vance Wilson, Headmaster
